What Is Regenerative Farming?

How flower farmers — and home gardeners — are building healthier soil without the chemicals

Regenerative farming means feeding the soil instead of just the plant — and flower farmers, urban gardeners included, are proving it works at any scale.

Regenerative farming gets thrown around a lot, usually next to "organic" and "sustainable," as if the three mean the same thing. They don't. Organic is mostly about what you leave out — synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilisers. Regenerative is about what you actively put back: life, structure and carbon into the soil itself. For flower farmers, that distinction matters more than it sounds, because a flower farm lives or dies on the health of its beds, not on a certificate.

What regenerative farming actually means

There's no single legal definition, and that's worth saying upfront — nobody polices the word "regenerative" the way they'd police "organic" under food law. What growers who use the term seriously tend to agree on is a handful of practices, not a checklist:

  • Disturb the soil as little as possible. Every time you dig or till, you break up the fungal networks and soil structure that took years to build.
  • Keep the soil covered. Bare soil erodes, dries out and loses microbial life fast — a layer of mulch, leaf litter or a cover crop does the job nature would otherwise do itself.
  • Keep living roots in the ground for as much of the year as possible. Roots feed the organisms that make soil fertile.
  • Feed the soil, not just the plant. Compost and organic matter build a system; synthetic fertiliser just force-feeds one crop cycle.
  • Build in diversity. Mixed plantings and habitat support the insects and microbes that do a lot of the pest and fertility work for free.

None of this is new. It's closer to how soil behaved before large-scale tillage and chemical inputs became standard. Regenerative farming is really just a deliberate return to that, applied with modern understanding of soil biology.

Why flower growers care about this specifically

Flowers aren't food crops, so it's tempting to assume soil health matters less. It's the opposite. Cut flowers are harvested constantly through a season — cut, cut, cut — which puts real strain on the plant and the bed. A flower farm with dead, compacted soil needs more water, more feeding and more replanting every year. A flower farm with living soil holds water longer, needs fewer inputs, and the plants themselves are sturdier — stronger stems, better vase life, fewer disease problems to spray for in the first place.

There's also a stems-per-plant argument that gets overlooked: healthier soil means healthier root systems, and healthier root systems mean more productive plants over a longer cutting window. For a small grower, that's the difference between a bed that pays for itself and one that doesn't.

How flower farmers are actually doing this

No-dig, no-till bed prep

Instead of turning the soil with a fork or tiller, growers smother existing grass or weeds with cardboard, then pile a thick layer — often 10 to 20cm — of good compost straight on top. Plants get transplanted directly into that compost layer. The soil underneath is never disturbed. Weeds get suppressed without herbicide, and the fungal network in the soil stays intact instead of getting sliced apart every season.

Making compost on-site rather than buying fertiliser

Spent stems, deadheaded flowers, weeds pulled by hand, kitchen scraps, grass clippings — all of it goes back into a compost heap instead of the bin. It's slower than a bag of fertiliser and it takes space, but it closes the loop: the farm feeds itself instead of importing bagged nutrients every season. Bought-in compost or well-rotted manure fills the gap in year one, while the farm's own supply builds up.

Leaving roots in the ground

When a stem is cut for harvest, it's cut at the base rather than the whole plant being pulled. The root mass stays in the soil, breaking down slowly and feeding the organisms that live there, rather than leaving a hole. Between plantings, cover crops go in to keep something living and rooted in beds that would otherwise sit bare.

Cutting synthetic inputs, not corners

No synthetic pesticides, and only organic-approved products where any feeding or pest treatment is genuinely needed. Instead of reaching for a spray at the first sign of aphids, the aim is a system resilient enough that pests don't get the upper hand in the first place — healthy plants, healthy predator populations, and enough diversity in the beds that one pest outbreak doesn't wipe out an entire crop.

Growing for biodiversity, not just for yield

This doesn't mean abandoning rows for something that looks like a cottage garden. Most commercial flower farms still plant in neat rows or blocks, because that's what makes harvesting, staking and irrigation manageable at scale. The diversity gets built in around and between those rows instead:

  • Cover crops in the pathways and any beds resting between crops — clover or oats sown between rows can be mown and left as mulch, so something is living and rooted even where cut flowers temporarily aren't.
  • Insectary borders at the ends of rows or along field edges — a strip of alyssum, dill or cosmos left to flower brings in far more ladybirds and hoverflies than a plant or two scattered on their own would.
  • Ducks or chickens rotated through beds between plantings — a well-known way to knock back slugs and snails without reaching for pellets, provided they're moved through in a controlled way rather than left to roam the whole farm.
  • Companion planting worked into the row itself — marigolds or alliums interplanted with a cut flower crop to help confuse pests or suppress nematodes, without changing the row structure at all.
  • Crop rotation from one season to the next, so the same bed isn't hosting the same flower — and the same pests and diseases — year after year.

The point isn't to make the farm look unruly. It's to get the pest control, soil cover and long-term fertility that a diverse system provides, without giving up the efficiency a grower needs to actually harvest and sell flowers at scale.

How to bring this into your own garden

You don't need a farm, a tiller, or a truckload of compost to start. Most of this scales down to a garden bed, a few containers, or a strip of lawn you're tired of mowing.

  • Stop digging the same patch over. Whether it's a flower bed or a vegetable patch, resist the urge to fork it over at the start of every season. Leave the structure alone and let the worms and fungi do the mixing instead.
  • Build a bed without a spade. Lay cardboard over grass or weeds, wet it down, and pile 10–15cm of compost or well-rotted manure on top. Plant straight into it. This works on a balcony in raised containers just as well as it does on an open bed.
  • Start a compost heap, even a small one. A bin in the corner of the garden for kitchen scraps, dead-headed flowers, grass clippings and fallen leaves is enough for a home garden. It won't replace bought compost overnight, but every bit you make is a bit you didn't have to buy or truck in.
  • Cut stems, don't pull plants. When you're clearing spent annuals, cut them at soil level and leave the roots to break down rather than yanking the whole plant out.
  • Don't leave beds bare. An empty patch between seasons is an invitation for weeds and erosion. Fill the gap with a quick-growing cover crop, or at least a layer of mulch, until you're ready to plant again.
  • Leave fallen leaves where they land in your beds. Skip the urge to rake them away every autumn. A bed left to build up its own layer of leaf litter mimics a forest floor, and that slow decomposition draws in the fungi, worms and insects that only benefit the soil and the plants growing in it. If you do need to rake leaves up somewhere — off a lawn, say — don't send them to the bin. Compost them, or spread them straight onto an existing bed, so that soil isn't left bare either.
  • Make room for something other than what you're growing to sell or eat. A patch of flowering plants left to their own devices, a hedge corner, even a few pots of herbs left to flower — anything that brings in pollinators and predatory insects is doing pest control for you, for free.
  • Reach for the spray last, not first. Check whether a stronger plant, a companion planting, or simply patience solves the problem before reaching for any product, organic-approved or not.

Is regenerative farming the same as organic farming?
